*DC power is rated in Newtons rather than horsepower. The stated HP is roughly equivalent to a 3/4 HP AC powered model.

How Your Smart Phone or PC Communicates with Your Garage Door Opener

The Craftsman AssureLink gateway is what facilitates two-way communication between your smart phone, PC or tablet and your garage door opener or optional home automation device. You simply connect the gateway to your home router with an Ethernet cable and then plug in the power supply.

Integrated into each AssureLink-compatible device is a transceiver radio that relays and receives commands sent through the 900 MHz internet gateway.

Once your garage door opener or other electronic device (like a lamp) successfully executes your instructions (like opening, closing or turning on), the gateway is alerted and reports back to your smart phone or PC with a status update. It’s very cool!

How does the Craftsman AssureLink system work?

The Internet Gateway communicates at 900 Mhz with a 1000 foot range. The garage door opener app tells you if the door is open and how long it has been open. There is actually a running timer to say how long it has been open or closed.

When you tell the system to close your garage door, there is an 8 second delay with lights flashing and audible signal to ensure safety. When you issue the command to open your door, there is no delay.

The app interface is very simple to use. Here’s all you need to do to get set up:

  1. Buy and install a Craftsman 3043 or Craftsman 30437 AssureLink equipped garage door opener.
  2. Connect the AssureLink gateway to your home network router.
  3. Create an account at: craftsman.com/assurelink. There is a standard website and a mobile version, so you can do this from your PC or from your smart phone.
  4. Register your AssureLink internet gateway using the serial number on the bottom of the device.
  5. Add an AssureLink device to the account. You can control up to 16 AssureLink devices from garage door openers to light and lamp plug modules.
  6. Download an app to your iPhone from iTunes or your Android device from Android Market.

What Else to Consider Before Getting Hooked on Craftsman AssureLink

  • Activating the technology is optional. In case you prefer not to pay the yearly $19.99 activation fee (which starts on Month 13 – the first year is free).
  • In the event of a faulty or inadequate Internet connection, your garage door opener will still work.
  • Depending on your internet connection, there can be a delay in response when issuing a command. This still beats driving home just to close your garage door or roll it up for an unexpected guest.
  • The supplied Ethernet cable is only 3 feet long.

Craftsman AssureLink – Is it worth the Price?

If you have an attached garage, an open garage door is an opening to your home. Peace of mind is worth a lot if you ever forget to close your garage door.

Beyond peace of mind, the system is also very convenient if you ever have deliveries, contractors, neighbors, family, etc., who need access to your home or garage when you are away. For example, a delivery person or contractor could call when they are at your house so you could open the garage door. When they are done, they could call again so you could the door and confirm it is closed.

For less than $50 for the gateway module, $20 a year on activation fees, and $300 or less for a compatible garage door opener (on sale), the AssureLink system may be a smart investment for the household that’s always on the go.
