Behr Garage Floor Paint

“Behr makes 2 varieties of garage floor paint. Both are water based and relatively simple to apply.”

Behr garage floor paint is a good option for those looking to update or dress up their garage flooring. Behr makes 2 varieties of garage floor paint. Both are water based and relatively simple to apply, provided you are willing to properly prepare the garage floor.

Behr Garage Floor Paint – 1 Part Epoxy

This is Behr’s least complicated garage floor paint. Designed for interior or exterior application, such as on garage floors or driveways, the 1 Part Epoxy is resistant to chemicals (like gas and oil), it is resistant to cracking, peeling, fading, etc., and it offers a nice satin finish. This 1 part product also resists hot tire pick up.

Behr 1 Part Epoxy Garage Floor Paint is not an industrial finish, like what is used in warehouses where forklifts are present. It is also not suitable as a concrete waterproofing agent, such as would be used on vertical concrete foundation surfaces. It is designed for horizontal surfaces and works well for garage floors, concrete basement floors, patios, porches and driveways.

What is hot tire pick up?

Depending on road conditions, how long and/or how far you drive your car, the tires will usually get hot. When you pull into the garage, the hot tires “pick up” the garage floor paint and ruin your garage floor’s finish (probably ruin your day, too). This is something you want to avoid.

Behr Garage Floor Paint – 2 Part Epoxy Floor Coating

This 2 part product is quite a different animal than Behr’s 1 part epoxy. Like its 1 part sibling, Behr’s 2 part epoxy is water based, it is resistant to chemicals, such as gas and oil, it is resistant to cracking, peeling, fading, etc., and it resists hot tire pick up.

Unlike the 1 part epoxy, this 2 part product is only suitable for interior use. In other words, it should not be used on driveways, patios, porches, etc. The finish is semi-gloss rather than satin (meaning it is a bit more on the shiny side), and preparation can be more involved than for the 1 part product.

Garage Floor Coatings: A Word of Caution

Both Behr garage floor paint products offer simple preparation and installation steps. However, simple does not always equate to easy. To me, simple means the project involves a logical, step-by-step process that nearly anyone can handle. Simple does not mean the project requires little work or effort. On the contrary, applying Behr garage floor paint, or any other garage floor coating for that matter, requires a lot of effort.

Any time you apply paint, epoxy, sealer or stain to concrete, the key to a quality finish is in the preparation. If you are not willing to carefully read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions, you will not likely be satisfied with the results. Depending on the product, preparation could include cleaning, stripping, sanding, etching, priming, etc. Just be sure you know what is involved before getting started.

If you are applying a garage floor coating to a new concrete garage floor, you also need to be patient. Generally, concrete must cure for at least 30 days before you apply any type of coating to the surface.

Other Behr Garage Floor Coatings and Where to Buy Behr Products

Behr offers a number of other garage floor coatings, concrete stains and sealers. Options included Behr Concrete Stain, Behr Concrete Sealer and Behr Concrete and Masonry Waterproofer. If you are looking strictly for a suitable garage floor paint, stick with their 1 Part or 2 Part epoxy paints. For exterior surface coatings, concrete sealers, etc., consider Behr’s other products.

The Home Depot (big orange box store in most cities – you know the place) carries the complete Behr paint line, including Behr garage floor paint. Behr floor preparation products, like cleaners, degreasers, primers, etc., can also be found in The Home Depot’s paint department.

Other Garage Flooring Options

Are you absolutely sold on applying some form of paint, sealer or coating to your garage floor? If so, do your homework, take the necessary time to prepare, apply the product and enjoy your beautiful garage floor.

On the other hand, if you are still weighing your options, there are other brands and types of garage floor coatings to consider, as well as other solutions including garage floor tiles, garage floor mats and other garage floor coverings.
