Infrared Garage Heaters: Uses, Pros, Cons and Alternativess

Infrared garage heaters offer direct, efficient heating of solid objects, like people, tools, projects, etc. For example, if you are standing in front of a garage workbench and you want to stay warm while working on a project, an infrared heater placed above the workbench would do the trick.

Usually propane or natural gas fired, infrared garage heaters are like a movable sun. If you are standing outside on a cool day and the sun comes out, you almost instantly feel its heat. That's because the sun radiates heat in the same way an infrared heater does.

In your garage, once the objects being heated become warm, they radiate heat into the area around them. That's how you can heat an entire garage with an infrared radiant heater.

Things to consider before buying an Infrared Garage Heater

Fuel types include propane and natural gas. Heaters are available in many sizes, from a small heater that attaches to the top of a 20 pound propane tank to a ceiling mounted unit with 45,000 BTU or more to heat a 2 to 3 car garage.

Most infrared garage heaters do not require electricity to operate, making them an excellent source of heat during a power outage. They can be attached to a temporary, portable fuel source, like a propane tank, or a permanent source like a natural gas line.

As a space heater, infrared models will do a nice job heating a garage workbench, a project area within your garage or shop, or your entire garage. Just be sure to buy the proper size if this is on your list of possible garage heaters. Some models are not suitable for indoor use. Consult the manufacturer and/or owners manual for details and safety precautions.

Pros and Cons of Infrared Garage Heaters

Pros:

  • Clean, efficient, cost effective heat
  • Propane and natural gas fuel options
  • Most models operate without a fan, keeping air and dust movement to a minimum
  • Operation is very simple
  • Most models do not require electricity, making them great in a power outage
  • Portable and permanent installation options exist
  • No moving parts (most models) and near maintenance-free operation

Cons:

  • Heaters get very hot when heating and proper clearance is critical to safe operation
  • Some models are not suitable for indoor use
  • Infrared garage heaters must be close enough to the object being heated for efficient operation
  • Heating large areas typically takes longer than garage heaters with a fan

Safety Considerations

  • Keep flammable objects away from the heater.
  • Keep your children and pets away from the heater at all times.
  • Keep adequate clearance around the heater to prevent burns.
  • Ventilation requirements vary by model. Check owners manual for specifics.
  • Some models are not suitable for indoor use.
  • Always consult the owners manual for safety precautions and proper installation requirements.

Alternative Garage Heater Options

If you want to consider other garage heaters, there are other options, including: Propane garage heaters (LP heaters), electric garage heaters and natural gas garage heaters. Electric heaters are the easiest to install, they are very convenient and can be portable. The down side to electric heaters is their generally higher operating cost.

In many cases, propane garage heaters, unlike electric heaters, require ventilation. Their operating cost is quite low and they are available in portable and permanently installed models. Natural gas garage heaters are eco-friendly, clean and effient, if you have natural gas available in your home.
