Today, the Genie brand is nearly synonymous with screw drive garage door openers, developed by the company in 1958, but Genie also makes a line of do-it-yourself and dealer-installed belt drive and chain drive models. Over the years Genie has manufactured garage door openers under many brands, including Alliance, BlueMax, Lift-a-door, Pro-Max, Hercules and Norelco. Parts for all of the Genie brands are supposed to be interchangeable and installation, especially for the screw drive models, is rated by consumers as among the easiest. NOTE: One thing to keep in mind with Genie is that they work with a lot of retailers, from The Home Depot to Sears, Lowe's and other retailers. Genie packages their garage door openers differently depending on who is selling them. For example, if you buy a DirectLift™ model from The Home Depot and one from Lowe's, the housing will look different even if the "guts" are the same.
