Craftsman Garage Door Opener
Model 53985

"The Craftsman garage door opener model 53985 comes
complete with all of the safety and security features of other Sears models"

The Craftsman garage door opener model 53985 is the top of the line 1/2 HP chain drive garage door opener from Sears. The 1/2 HP motor is paired with the same rugged chain drive as other Sears models, but the model 53985 is loaded with extra options.

The approximately $50 price difference between this model and the inexpensive model 53920 covers things like two lights instead of one, two 3-button Security+® remote controls instead of one single-button remote, a wireless, keyless entry keypad and a premium control console as opposed to a single doorbell-style button. Although the 1/2 HP motor will handle most single or double car garage door, you might want to consider a 3/4 HP opener for carriage house doors or heavy wooden garage doors.Craftsman Model 53985

The Craftsman garage door opener model 53985 comes complete with all of the safety and security features of other Sears models, including rolling code remotes, PosiLock® garage door lock and sensing technology to reverse and open the garage door when it encounters a person or object. The model 53985 also carries a 10-year motor warranty compared with a 4-year warranty for the entry-level model.

With more than 90 consumer reviews on the Sears garage door opener site, the Craftsman model 53985 receives decent but not excellent marks. Only 40% of users rated this model with five out of five stars, and about 63% give four or five out of five stars. At the other end of the scale, this model only received one star from about 25% of consumer respondents. The most common problem encountered by consumers was related to electronics. For example, non-working remote controls, garage door opening on its own, circuit board failure, etc.

NOTE: As with all Craftsman garage door openers, this model is suitable for DIY installation, but you can have Sears install it for a fee. If you have an 8 or 10 foot tall garage door, remember to buy the rail extension kit. Standard installation is for 7 foot tall doors.
